Security Technology has grown rapidly over the years with technological advances in existing security products with really not many new inventions worth mentioning, until today; Artelisys has introduced Honeywell Security with Innovation.
A prospective customer requested Artelisys services to design and install a security solution that would protect a remote off-grid, 5000 square foot outdoor fenced area. The customer’s primary concern was with false alarms; the customer requested the exclusion any type of security alarm sensor that could cause any type of false alarm via temperature change, wind, rodents, birds, insects, and any technology exploitation. It was pretty obvious that the traditional PIR/Microwave and Photoelectric Beams were out of the question.

A SunWize off-grid 700-watt solar array power system was design to provide adequate power for 24 hours of operation without commercial power. The system is equipped with SNMP monitoring allowing for proper notifications vi IP communications in the event there were any issues with the power system. Our Security NOC (SNOC) is able to utilize IP Communications to pull data, analyze and alert our security professionals of low voltages, low batteries, and charging issues with the power system.
The alarm panel of choice for the security solution was the Honeywell Vista 21iP with the snap-in Vista-GSM4G cellular module. The Honeywell brand is known, trusted, and preferred by millions, so the decision on which vendor to utilize for this solution was a no-brainer. The Vista 21iP panel contains an integrated RJ45 Ethernet connection that makes it the perfect candidate for IP networking.
The location of the site is about as remote as you can get in Hawaii. There is no commercial power available; there are no telecommunication (Fiber or copper) options at the site for phone and Internet. For the primary path of communications, an industrial outdoor LTE wireless Internet router with built-in LAN/Switch/Firewall/NAT technology provided the IP Internet communication link and connectivity for the Vista 21iP. Due to the remote location and marginal signal levels, the LTE router was designed with a directional antenna for optimal RF communications to the LTE cellular communications radio tower (Meeting FCC Requirements of course).
In the event that the primary path becomes unavailable, we opted to install and provision the Vista-GSM4 cellular module. Signal level readings were marginal (-102dBm); meeting FCC regulations, we utilized a directional antenna with LMR-400 coax to increase the signal level. We were able to obtain an RSL of about -95dBm, which was adequate for backup communication purposes.
The most challenging aspect of the project was trying to meet the customer’s requirements of mitigating false alarms; this meant not being able to utilize standard intrusion detection sensors. It is rare that you get to hear about innovative solutions utilizing innovative products. We searched high and low for any type of intrusion detection sensor(s) that would meet the customer’s requirements. In the end, we needed some type of “James Bond” intrusion detector; low and behold, Google was kind enough to provide a list of websites that matched our keyword criteria “James Bond Intrusion Detector.” <a href="http://www Read Full Report.xandem.com/”>Xandem Technology, headquartered in Utah, has patented and designed an innovative intrusion detector that senses motion when the system detects a disturbance in RF signals; the technology is Topographic Motion Detection (TMD). It met all of the customer’s requirements: provides full-area coverage, immune to birds, rodents, insects, wind, and temperature changes.
The beauty of the TMD technology is that it easily integrated with the Vista-21-iP through normally closed contacts. We did everything we could to cause a false alarm, in the end, it operated flawlessly.
